Loving Yourself On Valentine’s Day
Today, Valentine’s Day has turned into a day to celebrate the love you have with another person. A day to express undying love and a day to buy those sweets and flowers. However, why do we celebrate this love only once a year? What if we’ve chosen not to buy into this day or if we’ve chosen to stay single?
Being single on Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be depressing. I had a party a few years ago with my single friends and made a poster that read, “I Love ME!!!” Allowing ourselves and others to celebrate us for who we are sounds like a better idea than trying to find a last minute date who may or may not ruin the night.
Doing a little bit of online research, I found that the origins of this time of year come from a pagan celebration of purification called Lupercalia. This celebration would involve getting rid of the old and preparing for the new! Now, to me, that sounds like a great way to celebrate the 14th of February!!
Here are 5 things I do now to love myself on Valentine’s Day:
1) Take a bath usually while listening to music
2) Sit with myself and make a list of the things I’m grateful for
3) Think of a personal characteristic I need to improve or evolve
4) Enjoy a walk outside
5) Let the love in! Talk to loved ones, write/receive cards/ecards, & be kind to those around me.
Love isn’t just for Valentine’s Day. In the words of John Lennon, “All You Need Is Love” (all year ’round)!
