7 Ways Helping Others Makes Our World Kinder
There are many times we do small things for other people and it makes us feel good. So why don’t we do these little things more often??
I truly understand how life can get: phone calls, emails, texts, work, kids, partners… the list goes on. But instead of being so busy with life we can’t take our faces out of our phones, I challenge you to look up every now and then and practice one of these simple tasks. You’ll find yourself doing it without thinking after a few tries and making our world a kinder place!
Holding the door open
Take that extra second to wait for someone behind you or going the opposite direction to grab the door. Or a few seconds to help a parent with a stroller. Honestly, it won’t take that long and you’ll hopefully get a ‘thank you!’
Whenever you wear a smile you will notice that others will catch the wave! Smiles are contagious and the easiest form of affection, they’re also cross-cultural. Peace Pilgrim quoted, “Life is like a mirror. Smile at it and it smiles back at you.”
Offering your seat
On public transit, if you are capable of standing and see someone in need, give up your seat and I’m sure the smile will follow!
Body language
Body language is one way we put energy out into the world. If you’re aware of it, it can change your day from good to bad in a matter of seconds. Relax your shoulders, uncross your arms and legs, and don’t scowl. Add that smile or something close and watch how the day unfolds.
Tell someone you care about just how much they mean to you! Embracing the caring side of yourself and sharing it with someone can have profound effects on your environment and your life. “Love is the master key that opens the gates of happiness.” Oliver Wendell Holmes.
Say “thank you!”
If someone holds the door for you, say “thank you!” If someone lets you go in front of them at the store because you have fewer things then they do, say “thank you!” If a complete stranger helps you find something you’re looking for, say “thank you!” (Are you catching my drift here??) Whether it’s a complete stranger or someone you know, acknowledge their kindness with kind words.
Lend a hand
When a person is struggling with bags or trying to get onto the bus, lend a helping hand. Usually the person receiving the assistance will be very grateful and try to reciprocate your kindness some time during their day to someone else, and the domino effect will take place.
When one act of random kindness makes you feel good, it will make those who you’ve helped feel even better! Enjoy your day and keep smilin’!
