5 Surefire Ways to Find a Counsellor You Like!
Finding a counsellor is very much like making a new friend. You have to feel comfortable with them to talk about anything and everything. They have to make you think and engage you enough to want to make the changes in your life. Below are five surefire ways to ensure you get the help you’re looking for!
1. Interview them.
This is my favourite way to find professionals I can be myself with. Ask them questions.
What is on the internet is usually only the tip of the iceberg. Ask the counsellor pointed questions that are important to you, this will help you get what you deserve.
2. Research them.
Click on their links. Visit their social media pages. Google them. Find out what types of credentials and experience they have through these means of communication.
3. Hear-say.
Most of the time we shouldn’t listen to rumors. I know my mother has told me that there’s little truth to what others said in school, only gossip. Sometimes, however, when it comes
to our personal health as an adult these rumors might actually make a difference. I would never see a doctor that I’ve heard has poor bedside manner and doesn’t actually listen to you. What’s the point in going? I already feel crappy, why feel worse??? Take this idea into account when searching out your counsellor.
4. Understanding, not surprise.
You should expect to get understanding from the counsellor you’re interviewing. If they seem surprised or say something like, “I’ve never heard that before,” then perhaps they may not be what you need at this point in your life.
5. Be to the point and watch the time.
Make sure that you have been able to ask all of your questions. Also be aware of the time.
It can be a huge indicator of how well you get along with the person if that first phone interview went by quickly and smoothly. Maybe the easiest counsellor to talk to can be the right fit.
My last point of advice when searching out the counsellor or therapist for you, is to always listen carefully. Listen to what they are telling you and take notes. Listen to your gut – is your stomach agreeing with your mind? It’s your life so take good care of it!
